Ryan Adams Cancels Remainder of US Tour Due to Illness

Published: 2005-08-12
Absurdly prolific singer-songwriter Ryan Adams has abruptly cancelled the last five West Coast dates of his US tour. Travelling in his current Ryan Adams & the Cardinals incarnation, Adams attributes the cancellations to illness and voice troubles in a surprisingly candid statement posted on the website of his record company, Lost Highway.

"Hey everybody," Adams writes, "the band just got a bad bug on the way back from Japan that kept wearing us down. Really sorry about having to cancel the gigs, especially since I never have to cancel anything. But my voice was fried and the band was just toast. And I never fully recovered from my inner ear infection.

"Unfortunately," he continues, "I have infected cysts next to my ear canal, causing hearing, balance and throat problems. Some people would protest that it's just the wineÍ whereas the wine to me is just self-respect."

Fair enough. Part of the reason for Adams and band's immune system deficiencies may be their overwhelming workload. Despite the release of Cold Roses this past May, Adams already has two other records in the proverbial can and slated for release this year, reportedly titled September and 29. So, of course, when the band went into the studio recently to record a song for the upcoming Cameron Crowe movie Elizabethtown, they went ahead and recorded another 17 while they were there.

Yeesh, take a break already. Oh, waitˇyou just did.
