CBGB DoesnŪt Have to Pay Back Rent

Published: 2005-08-12
Although the future of legendary New York club CBGB is still foggy, owner Hilly Kristal recently won a court battle with his landlord, Muzzy Rosenblatt, who has been famously trying to evict the venue from its Bowery location. On August 10th a Manhattan Civil Court judge ruled that CBGB does not have to pay back rent of about US$100,000 to the Bowery Residents' Committee.

So while the club has saved that chunk of change, the rent on CBGB's location will double next month to $40,000 if its lease is even renewed. On top of that, building code violations in the tiny club remain an issue. Able to hold just 300 people within its walls, CBGB is a stalwart institution in New York City, and is known as "the birthplace of punk."

The details and reasons behind the legal battles between CBGB and the BRC (a non-profit organization for the homeless) are varied and many, but basically the NPO that is the BRC wants CBGB out ASAP. With famous friends like Talking Heads frontman David Byrne offering to help the club out, it's still not any clearer whether or not CBGB will be nothing but a memory by the end of the year. A series of "Save CBGB" benefit shows will be taking place throughout August and September; visit cbgb.com for details.
