Jamming with Burt Neilson Band

Published: 2005-08-08
Burt Neilson Band is the ultimate jam band, their live shows span nearly two hours, and from the sound of things, they could probably play for another two hours still. Some songs go on for well over ten minutes.

There are long trading solos between guitarist and singer Mike Filipowitsch and keyboardist and singer Jeff Heisholt. Drummer Gavin Maguire and bassist Jeremy Little play around with some rather slick, funky blues timings hinting a little Grateful Dead style. Jeff has a raspy, old bluesman voice, and Mike has that innocent schoolboy thing going on.

Hailing from Thunder Bay, the Burt Neilson Band formed in 1996, and over their nine-year stint, have toured coast to coast, played 800 shows, released four successful independent albums and gained loyal fans everywhere. The original lineup of seven players, has been cut to a 4-piece, and from their 1998 self-titled debut, right up to their latest By the Door the group's songwriting skills have evolved, showing musical growth.

BNB recently wrapped up a show at the El Mocambo, where they played alongside Grand Theft Bus, they have three dates again in Ontario throughout August and September, and they play Nova Scotia on August 27. Check out www.burtneilson.com for more details.
