Live 8 Success Spurs More AOL Online Broadcasts

Published: 2005-07-14
With the success of their Live 8 broadcasts, America Online executives have joined up with XF Satellite Radio and Anschutz Entertainment Group to form Network Live. The new endeavour will offer concerts and comedy events on the Internet and through satellite and wireless media.

"[This is] a new era for live entertainment on the Web," said Jon Miller, chairman and CEO of AOL. "This venture taps into the immediacy of the Internet for live shows and live shows on demand." Instead of using a pay-per-view model, the new company will generate revenue from ads and licensing fees.

Two million people watched AOL's broadcast of the Live 8 benefit concerts. AOL broke its own record for simultaneous viewing when 175,000 people watched at the same time.
