Led Zeppelin Voted Ideal Supergroup

Published: 2005-07-11
The members of British heavy metal legend Led Zeppelin are the United Kingdom's ideal supergroup according to a Planet Rock Radio poll. The station asked around 3500 people to create their all-time favourite fantasy band, instrument by instrument.

"This is an amazing result," said Planet Rock's Trevor Dann. "Listeners could have voted for any classic rock artists when creating their fantasy supergroup." The poll's structure allowed participants to vote separately for each category of instrumentalist.

Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant beat the late Queen singer Freddie Mercury as well as Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), who is currently on tour with the surviving members of Queen. Jimmy Page won best guitarist, followed by Slash (Guns 'N' Roses, Velvet Revolver) and Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow). Bassist John Paul Jones was named top bassist, while Zeppelin drummer John Bonham beat out Canadian Neil Peart(Rush) and Keith Moon (The Who) in the drummer category.
