Elbow Gets Creative with 'The Free World'

Published: 2005-06-22
After a year tucked away in a Manchester studio, dream pop band Elbow has finally finished up work on its third studio album. Different from anything they, or really anyone else, has ever done before, Leaders of the Free World is essentially the product of collaboration between Elbow and filmmakers the Soup Collective.

Part visual and part auditory, the making of Leaders was captured on film by the Soup Collective, who had a great influence on the album itself. Elbow lead singer Guy Garvey explains the unique set-up in a message found at the band's website (elbow.co.uk):

"The Soup Collective would be throwing these images on to a big screen in the studio whilst we were recording and they were working on the DVD and that would influence us. So the music influenced the pictures but the pictures also influenced the music. It's truly collaborative."

While the CD version of Leaders of the Free World won't be available until September 5th, the DVD version will be making its debut on July 6th at London's National Film Theatre. The last album from Elbow was the well received Cast of Thousands, released in January 2004.
