Soul Asylum Bassist Dies of Cancer

Published: 2005-06-21
The bass player and co-founder of 90s rock band Soul Asylum died Friday of throat cancer. Karl Mueller, 41, was diagnosed with the disease a year ago and spent the past year in and out of the hospital for various treatments.

Last October, Mueller joined Soul Asylum for a benefit gig to raise money for his rising medical costs. Other musicians that participated in the event were Husker Du's Bob Mould and Paul Westerberg of the Replacements.

Soul Asylum started out in the 1980s and hit it big with 1992's Grave Dancers Union, which contained the hit "Runaway Train."
