Newport Folk Festival Add Pixies and Bright Eyes

Published: 2005-06-17
The legendary Newport Folk Festival, which boasts such alumni as Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez, has added Boston rockers the Pixies and Conor Oberst's latest project, Bright Eyes, to its lineup. The Pixies will be playing an acoustic set for the first time in their career on August 6th, while Bright Eyes performs the following day.

Other artists playing the main stage include Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Richard Thompson, the Bela Fleck Acoustic Trio, and the Del McCoury Band. The acts set to perform on the second stage include Jane Siberry, Teddy Thompson, Arlo Guthrie, and Kaki King.

The Newport Folk Festival started in 1959 in Newport, Rhode Island, and made history 1965 when Bob Dylan used his performance there to go electric for the first time. Organizers shut down the festival in the 70s over fears of possible rioting in the wake of the Altamont Festival. At that December 1969 event held in Livermore, California, many people were hurt and four were killed, one of whom was stabbed and kicked to death during the Rolling Stones' set.
