Kanye West's 'Registration' Gets Later

Published: 2005-06-16
The highly anticipated sophomore effort from rapper-producer extraordinaire Kanye West has been given the old push-back by label Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam. Original slated to drop on July 12th, Late Registration will not hit shelves until a month later on August 16th.

The first single from the follow-up to 2004's massive The College Dropout, "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," is hitting the air as planned, however. The video for the song, directed by Hype Williams, premiered last night on BET, meaning MTV and MuchMusic will undoubtedly play it 30 times a day from now on.

West is known for bringing a unique, truthful edge to hip-hop, and the video for "Diamonds" continues that tradition. The clip juxtaposes the elegance and class of DeBeers Diamonds commercials with the horrible conflicts the diamond trade has caused in war-torn Sierra Leone.

On a lighter note, British music magazine NME caught up with West at the Prague video shoot, where the rapper had some nice words to say about art-rock act Franz Ferdinand. Members of the Scottish quartet have previously voiced their admiration for West, and he returned it fully.

"I just told them I really liked how grimy their drums were, that was really important to me. I wanted to know how they got their sound," said West, dubbing it "white crunk." "I was asking them all types of questions. I told them they were my favourite band, [that] there's a bit of their feel in my new album."

I never knew about Sierra Leone. I only knew about the Beligan Congo, and that was rubber.... Kanye knows how to inform the world lyrically.
