Bono Presses European Union for More Aid

Published: 2005-06-10
U2 lead singer Bono and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso joined together recently to plead with government leaders to double aid to Africa and other poorer regions in the next ten years.

Bono has backed a worldwide campaign, the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, to push rich Western countries to generate better trade deals and increase aid to the poorer ones. Next month, U2 will be playing the London edition of July 2nd's Live 8 concerts, whose goal is to pressure Western governments to cancel the debt of, increase aid to and trade fairly with developing countries.

The European Union is already the world's largest donor to combat poverty in Africa and recently endorsed a plan to increase the EU's annual development aid from US$57 billion to US$111 billion US by 2015.
