Montreal Controls the 'asKaa' Universe

Published: 2005-05-30
It's not every day you get the opportunity to control the universe. Nine artists from around the world have the chance to do just that, however, when they perform as part of asKaa, skoltz_kolgen's "interactive ecosystem inspired by the natural world." The project debuts June 1st at the Mus»e d'art contemporain de Montreal.

On display and in performance until June 5th, asKaa includes two gigantic projection screens that show a universe in constant evolution. In varying ways, sound impulses control the developmental processes of plants projected on the screens.

How skoltz_kolgen developed the living, breathing virtual-universe is a mystery, but the nine international artists invited to perform live in the asKaa environment will put it to full use. The individual sounds and rhythms created by skoltz_kolgen (Canada), Richard Chartier (USA), 3x3is9 (Canada), Martux_M (Italy), Nathan McNinch (Canada), Fm3 (China), Jamie Drouin (Canada), Joe Colley (USA), and Taylor Deupree (USA) will stimulate the projected plants to evolve in equally individual ways.

Check out the asKaa Universe at the sixth annual MUTEK Festival at the Mus»e d'art contemporain de Montreal from June 1st to 5th. Go to and for more information.
