Kylie Minogue Faces Breast Cancer

Published: 2005-05-18
Australian-born pop star Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36. Due to the diagnosis, made while Minogue was visiting family in Melbourne, the singer will have to postpone all remaining Australian and Asian dates on her "Showgirl" tour.

Minogue rose to fame in the 1980s as an actress and pop singer. Her rendition of the hit song "Loco-motion" was an international smash. After some time out of the spotlight, she made a huge comeback in 2000 with the album Light Years. She had an even bigger hit with the follow up album, Fever, which contained the huge hit single "Can't Get You Out of My Head." Her latest release is 2004's Body Language.

Each year almost 12,000 Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer, with the majority aged 50 to 69. (Canada's over 20,000 annual diagnoses out of a population about one-and-a-half times the size of Australia's puts our per capita rate somewhat higher.) It's not as common for someone of Kylie's age to contract the disease. It can have more psychological repercussions for younger victims, and especially for someone like Minogue, who is known as a sex symbol.

Luckily, when breast cancer is detected early, as Minogue's was, the chances of successful recovery are higher. Doctors combine localized surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy to try to cure the cancer.

Minogue is not alone in her fight against breast cancer. Olivia Newton-John is a breast cancer survivor, and rocker Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer last year.
