B.B. King Named Blues Entertainer of the Year at the W.C. Handy Awards

Blues legend B.B. King was recognized as the entertainer of the year for the seventh straight year at the 26th annual W.C. Handy Awards for blues. Other award winners included Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite, who each took three awards. John Lee Hooker Jr. won best new artist.

Staples won for best album, best soul album and top female soul artist. Musselwhite won best contemporary male artist, best harmonica player and best contemporary album. The W.C. Handy awards were named after blues musician W.C. Handy and are given out by the Blues Foundation of Memphis. Handy performed in Memphis in the early 1900s and is widely credited with being the first musician to put the blues into written form.
