Cobain Flick to Premiere at Cannes Film Festival

Published: 2005-05-09
The Kurt Cobain-inspired film Last Days will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this month. Controversy has surrounded the movie since word got out that it was loosely based on Cobain and the grunge band Nirvana.

The film is set in the 1990s and focuses on the last days of a rock star named Blake and his band. In an online report, director Gus Van Sant, whose resume includes such films as Drugstore Cowboy, Good Will Hunting, and Finding Forrester, explained that the film is not specifically about Cobain but is rather a view of what someone in the same situation might have gone through leading up to his death. The director gave assurances that the movie neither draws conclusions about nor attempts to represent Cobain's actual death.

Courtney Love, Cobain's former spouse, is reportedly happy with the film, while current Foo Fighter and ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is eyeing the project with suspicion.

The film will premiere in the U.K. and North America in the fall.
