The Beatles Break Record With Sixth Diamond Award

Published: 2005-05-05
The Beatles earned another landmark by becoming the only band to have six albums with at least 10 million units sold in the U.S. The Beatles 1 album passed the mark in April to receive the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Diamond Award.

The Beatles were previously tied with fellow British act Led Zepplin with five diamond awards but now are in sole possession of the top spot. The biggest Beatle's album in the U.S. remains their 1968 masterpiece The Beatles or the "White Album" as it's commonly known. That album has sold 19 million copies in the U.S. and counting.

The Beatles broke up in 1970 but still command a following that no other musical act experiences. In 1980, a crazed gunman murdered John Lennon outside his apartment in New York. In 2001, George Harrison passed away of cancer.
