Coldplay Debut New Single in US Top 10

Published: 2005-05-02
British act Coldplay is the first British band since The Beatles to debut a single in the US top 10. Coldplay's new single "Speed of Sound" is expected to debut at number 8 on the US singles charts. Shockingly, The Beatles' "Hey Jude" released 37 years ago was the last single from a British band to debut in the top 10 when it made its debut at number 10.

Though the Beatles and many other legendary bands such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Queen and The Who have all had success on the US charts none of them have debuted a single in the US top 10 since the success of "Hey Jude" in 1968. Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" also has the notable distinction of registering the highest week one download sales for any new track in history reaching number 1 on all 15 iTunes download music Stores worldwide.

Coldplay singer Chris Martin made news recently by saying that the band may come to an end if the new album is successful. Citing that the pressure of success may drive the band apart, Martin declared that leaving it at a trilogy of albums would be a good way to go out. The new Coldplay album X & Y is due out June 6.
