The Grand Ole Opry Turns 80 In Style

Published: 2005-04-27
Older than all of the country stars that perform in its name, the infamous Grand Ole Opry is celebrating its 80th anniversary in a big way this year. Beginning late next month and stretching out over eight months, celebrations and special events honouring the Opry will take place all around the USA.

Kicking it all off on May 28th is Eight Decades of Country, the first in a series of 80th Anniversary Signature Shows. Fans can vote for their favourite classic and contemporary songs to be performed live on the Opry stage. Those who wish to have a say in what's performed can go to and vote for everything from "Blue Yodel #8 Muleskinner Blues" to "Whiskey Lullaby".

Taking the feel of the Nashville Opry performances across the country, "An Evening With The Grand Ole Opry" tour will kick off this spring. The likes of Patty Loveless, Ricky Skaggs, and Del McCoury Band will be some of the acts taking the Opry on the road. The full schedule for the tour hasn't been announced yet, but check back to for constant updates.

The eight months of celebrations will build up to one day: November 14th, when the Opry makes its return to Carnegie Hall in New York City. Culminating in The 80th Anniversary Show, a huge line-up has been amassed for the event with some of the biggest names in country music including Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Trace Adkins, and Canada's own Alison Krauss and Union Station.
