Bono Continues Fight Against AIDS and Poverty

Published: 2005-04-22
U2 singer Bono has stepped up his fight against poverty and AIDS by enlisting celebrities to encourage people to get involved. Stars including Sean "Puffy" Combs, Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx and many more have devoted their time and voices to the cause.

The One Campaign was set up to rally Americans to fight global AIDS and poverty. The goal is to lobby the American government to devote an additional one percent of the budget toward providing things like healthcare, clean water, food, and education. One percent of the US budget is estimated at around $25 billion.

A series of public service announcements, the first of which debuted April 10th, will be broadcast on TV and the Internet to create awareness. Organizers of the One Campaign see 2005 as a crucial year because of three international conferences scheduled featuring many of the world's richest countries. In July there is the G8 Summit, in September the U.N. Millennium +5 Summit, and in December the World Trade Organization meeting. All three conferences will focus on Africa.
