Duff McKagen Speaks About Kurt Cobain

Published: 2005-04-21
Speaking with the Seattle Times recently, bassist Duff McKagen spoke about recording Velvet Revolver's sophomore album, life in a band again, and Kurt Cobain. According to McKagen, Velvet Revolver is currently writing songs to be recorded in the fall and winter.

McKagen also mentioned he ran into Kurt Cobain's widow and current tabloid queen Courtney Love in Las Vegas at a store opening where the two sang a rendition of the Guns N' Roses song "It's So Easy."

McKagen was one of the last people to speak with Cobain before his suicide. The two ran into each other at an airport in L.A. and flew together to Seattle in April of 1994. McKagen explained that he had no idea that Cobain was going to end his life, though he could tell the Nirvana frontman was bummed out. At the baggage claim McKagen was going to ask Cobain to come over to his house, but before he had the chance Cobain was gone.

Glad just to be alive after years of substance abuse and other problems, McKagen is cherishing the second chance of playing in Velvet Revolver, especially after the implosion of his former band, Guns N' Roses. Clean and sober now, the bassist has kept a low profile over the past decade, getting involved with various musical projects, raising a family, and going back to school.

Velvet Revolver is currently on tour in North America and heads to Europe in the summer.
