Coldplay Debuts New Single over the Phone

British band Coldplay recently signed a deal with American cellular phone service provider Cingular Wireless to debut their new single as a ring tone. The single "Speed of Sound" off Coldplay's forthcoming album X&Y has been available as a 30-second ring tone for a few days.

The single is kicking off the company's "Cingular Sounds" program, which will debut several artists' songs as ring tones. Coldplay's official website ( cryptically notes the band "have not entered into any agreement to facilitate this promotion."

Coldplay is not the first band to embrace wireless technology. Many acts are signing on, seeing it as a new revenue stream and promotional tool. Other established acts trying out this new distribution channel include Jennifer Lopez, Modest Mouse, Snoop Dogg, Velvet Revolver, and many more, covering genres ranging from urban to gospel to classical. The ring tone industry has exploded as wireless technology has continued to evolve.
