First Combined Digital & Physical UK Singles Sales Chart Released

Published: 2005-04-18
The first sales chart featuring both physical and digital sales was published yesterday in the United Kingdom. Taking into account purchases of both traditional record store singles and legal digital downloads, the chart has caused a bit of chaos by merging the two previously separate worlds.

Most problematically, many independently released singles are not available for digital download through major online music stores like iTunes, and therefore won't be counted on the chart. Unlike in North America, singles sales carry a lot of weight in the UK, giving the official chart much more importance for musicians making their livings on the other side of the Atlantic.

The UK's Association of Independent Music, an industry lobbying organization, is opposing the merge, going to the UK consumer watchdog Office of Fair Trading to see if they can bring a stop to it. The Official UK Charts Company, which compiles the list, has said that the singles chart will be fair to independents, and will in fact give them a better showing. Whatever the eventual outcome for indie labels, the current top selling single in the UK, for the fifth week in a row, is Tony Christie's "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo."
