M.I.A.'s Debut Gets New Lease on Life

Published: 2005-03-04
Isn't it a bit annoying when one of the most anticipated releases of the year is pulled just days before it's supposed to hit shelves? Yes, yes it is, but much to the pleasure of many music fans the world over, the debut album from British artist M.I.A. (real name: Maya Arulpragasam) won't be too much later than expected. Originally scheduled for release on February 22nd, "Arular" is now due to hit North American shelves exactly one month later on March 22nd.

The reason for the hold-up hoopla was an issue of unidentified samples used on the 11-track disc, issues that M.I.A.'s label XL Recordings didn't fancy dealing with. According to Billboard, the quick solution was for M.I.A. to make a jump to Interscope Records, who will now handle "Arular". What this means is that North America will still get to see something it rarely does: the release of an album before the UK ("Arular" drops April 4th in the UK).

M.I.A. already made a stop in Canada in early February, and she'll be retuning to these shores later this year. M.I.A. has plans to perform at this year's Coachella Festival in Indio, California on the presumably sunny day of May 1st. Listen to a clip of the very catchy "Galang" (the lead off single for "Arular") at M.I.A.'s official web site: www.miauk.com.

The track-listing of "Arular" just happens to be:

Banana Skit
Pull Up The People
Bucky Done Gun
Fire Fire
Freedom Skit
One For The Head Skit
10 11
M.I.A. (hidden track)
