Ex-Libertine Carl Barat Gets Some Alone Time

Published: 2005-02-23
Drama, drama, drama. First The Libertines broke up, then they're back together, then Pete's gone missing, and then they're done for. It looks like co-frontman Carl Barat has had enough of the soap opera life for the time being, and is set to venture out into the world as a solo artist for the first time. The singer/songwriter/guitarist has reportedly inked a deal with UK label Vertigo for the project.

Home to the likes of Razorlight, Thirteen Senses, and The Rapture, Vertigo houses the non-mainstream bands of Mercury Records. According to the label's web site, Barat is currently in the process of "writing solo material". A finished album is expected from Barat by the end of the year, though no promises have been made.

Technically, The Libertines have split, but Barat's new band is to be comprised of Libertine members - drummer Gary Powell and/or bassist John Hassall, but presumably not Pete Doherty. Doherty, the by-now-notorious-problem-addled-estranged-ex-co-frontman of The Libertines, has been active with his band Babyshambles as of late. Their song "Kilimanjaro" tore up the British singles charts, and their debut album is expected sometime this summer.

You can get a taste of Carl Barat solo by checking out the new Client single "Pornography", which features the singer all by his lonesome. Watch the video at Launch.com.
