CBC Radio 3 Re-evaluates Its Reach

Published: 2005-02-18
Fulfilling their mission to bring our stretched-out borders closer together in hopes of holding Canadian underground music up to the light, CBC Radio 3 is set to take the next step in its relatively short life. Not so much an actual national radio station as a show that crops up on CBC Radio 2 every once in a while, Radio 3 is getting down to serious business, reorganizing and expanding its content.

Radio 3 reaches into all facets of the Canadian arts: it's a radio program (duh), online magazine, and series of websites dedicated to Canadian music - those would be newmusiccanada.com, rootsmusiccanada.com, justconcerts.com, and cbcradio3.com. Plans for Radio 3's new life include combining all the websites into one, to be located at www.cbcradio3.com; and sadly, the discontinuation of the brilliant online magazine (which just hit the 100th edition mark) so more focus can be put on new ventures.

Another change to be taking place regarding CBC Radio 3 is more on-air time for the station. Currently Radio 3 is heard only on Saturday and Sunday nights, but plans are to expand and feature even more Canadian content and artists that come from the mysterious underground. And if all Canadian music fans collectively cross their fingers, CBC Radio 3 might even be granted a satellite radio station licence - meaning Radio 3 all across the country, all the time.

If there is CBC Radio 3 content 24/7, it means the end of constantly trying to find a decent radio station that plays more than two good songs in a row; twisting radio dials can give a person very painful hand cramps.
