54*40 Lose Guitarist Phil Comparelli

Published: 2005-02-17
Long known as one of Canada's best and most enduring live acts, Vancouver quartet 54*40 have lost a member. Guitarist Phil Comparelli has left the band due to undisclosed personal reasons. Comparelli had been with 54*40 for a quite impressive 23-year-long run, joining the band in 1982 to make what started out as a trio, a complete quartet.

It appears that Comparelli departed from 54*40 on good terms with bassist Brad Merritt, drummer Matt Johnson, and vocalist Neil Osbourne, as the other members expressed their appreciation of all Comparelli's contributed to the band, through their web site (www.5440.com). Not only did Comparelli co-write and play on some of 54*40's most memorable tracks - like "Since When", "Baby Ran", and the tune everybody knows "I Go Blind" - but he also helped the four-piece gain their notoriety as a live band.

The replacement for Comparelli has already been chosen; Dave Genn, who used to count himself as a member of The Matthew Good Band, has stepped up to the plate. Genn played on MGB albums "Underdogs" and "Beautiful Midnight", as well as contributing to both Emm Gryner and Holly McNarland's work.

In late 2003, 54*40 released the tenth studio album "Goodbye Flatland" of their nearly quarter-century-long career. The record features 12 new tracks from the classic Canadian band, all of which can be heard at 54*40's web site.

I have been listening to "5440" since the beginning, losing Phil Comparelli is like losing the sound of the band.
