Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas Releases Solo Debut

Published: 2005-02-10
Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas is following in the steps of Beyonce and Gwen Stefani, and embarking on a solo career. The Grammy Award-winning singer has just completed his first solo effort, and the album will become available for purchase this spring. Thomas has titled the highly anticipated disc "Something To Be", which has finally been given a solid release date of April 26th.

Although the full-length doesn't come out for a few months, Thomas has already released the first single from "Something To Be". "Lonely No More" was released to radio this month, and already it's off to a smashing start. The song, which Thomas penned himself, has made strong appearances on Adult Contemporary stations across the country.

Of course Thomas is best known for his work with his band of nearly ten years, making hits out of songs like "Push", "3AM", and "Disease". Outfitted with some instantly recognizable vocals, Thomas' duet with guitar master Santana proved to be one of the singer's brightest moments. The single "Smooth" earned Thomas three Grammys.

In other Rob Thomas news, he will be attending this year's Grammy Awards not as a nominee but as a presenter. Thomas will be handing out the first annual "President's Merit Award Salute To Industry Icons" to Atlantic Records founder and chairman Ahmet Ertegun.

If for some reason, fans haven't heard Rob Thomas' new single, a clip of "Lonely No More" can be heard at the singer/songwriter's official web site, which is:

Why?? Matchbox Twenty were so good together...why is he leaving? I've always hated that singers from bands go they think they are better? How can they ditch the rest of the band like that?? This is very upseting news for me.

Rob thankfully is NOT leaving the band, they are on hiatus, on a break. They are all working on solo projects at this time, and will regroup after about a year or so. All except for rythym guitarist Adam Gaynor, sadly.

They plan on getting back together. the whole band is doing solo projects right now, it's just that Rob's is obviously going to be the most popular.
