Usher, Scissor Sisters Top Selling Albums of 2004

Published: 2005-01-07
With record companies crying bankruptcy since the beginnings of the 2000's, it's become strikingly obvious that illegal downloading isn't the demon they would have us believe. Case in point: 2004 was actually a really good year for record sales. While album sales had been declining for the first half of the decade, things have begun to pick up again, with a 2.3% increase in the US and a 3% increase in the UK (all with downloading on the rise).

The United Kingdom and the United States are the biggest markets for music (perhaps something to do with their large populations) and the top albums of 2004 for each country are in them. No surprise comes from our neighbours to the south; Usher's 'Confessions' moved the most units, with sales totalling over eight million (runner-up Norah Jones sold half as much). Country artists made a good showing, with Kenny Chesney, Gretchen Wilson, and Tim McGraw taking spots 4, 5, and 6, respectively.

With a hop across the pond, the situation is a bit different. Flashy neo-disco rockers Scissor Sisters found themselves on the top of the heap for 2004 with their self-titled debut. It was an incredibly tight race for the #1 selling LP in the UK however. Before holiday shoppers entered the stores in droves, Keane's debut 'Hopes and Fears' was on top, but before 2005 was born, New York's Scissor Sisters outsold the English trio by just 582 copies to end up with the best selling album of 2004 in the UK (1,594,259 copies sold).

The top selling albums of 2004 were÷

In the US:

1. Usher - 'Confessions'
