Bright Eyes Sees Double

Published: 2004-11-23
For the past few days the biggest news in the indie music world has been Bright Eyes' unimaginable feat of taking over the top two spots of the Billboard Hot One Hundred Singles chart. Knocking Usher and Alicia Keys from the top spot is no easy task, but Bright Eyes (aka Conor Oberst) did just that with his simultaneously released singles 'Lua' and 'Take It Easy (Love Nothing)'.

To celebrate not only his, but indie music's small but welcome victory over mainstream drivel, Bright Eyes is heading out on tour next year. Just like his singles, Oberst is simultaneously releasing two separate full-length albums on January 25th. And like singles 'Lua' & 'Take It Easy (Love Nothing)' and albums 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' & 'Digital Ash In a Digital Urn', Bright Eyes is launching two separate tours (although sadly, not simultaneously).

The first tour, in support of the folky/acoustic 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning', currently has 27 stops scheduled for 2005. The tour is set to kick off on January 14th in Oberst's hometown of Omaha, Nebraska and finish in Seattle on February 17th. There is just one Canadian stop included on the tour: January 21st in Toronto at the Phoenix Theatre.

Following his jaunt across North America, Bright Eyes and his backing band will head to Australia and New Zealand in the spring as opening act for R.E.M. The Bright Eyes tour in support of 'Digital Ash In a Digital Urn' (the more electronic album) is expected to begin in May or June, fittingly featuring electro-rockers The Faint as backing band.

Upon their release, 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' and 'Digital Ash In a Digital Urn' will become Bright Eyes' fifth and sixth full-length album (although which is which is a mystery). The last album that Oberst offered up was 2002's lengthily titled 'Lifted or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground'.
