Music DVD Sales on the Rise

While alarm bells have been going off in the music industry due to dropping album sales since the beginning of the millennium, there's at least one area that's beginning to pick up after the slump. The newest media to enter the world of music, the DVD, has become an increasingly popular item among Canadian buyers.

Ken Kirkwood, the director of product for the huge music store chain HMV Canada has noticed an increase of music DVD sales in his stores.

Though sales of music DVDs is by no means an astronomical number yet, providers of the items are seeing an increased demand. It's not just any type of music DVD that buyers are adding to their collections though. Those releases that offer only music videos as content are dismal sellers, while concert footage of classic rockers such as Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones are among the most in demand.

To meet the new demand for music DVDs, Canada's major labels are prepared to release even more albums with DVD content included. DualDisc items, those albums that include both an audio and visual component, are also a growing market as seen in Simple Plan's latest release 'Still Not Getting Any'. Other Canadians that have decided to release a music DVD include Hawksley Workman, Diana Krall, Great Big Sea, and Sarah McLachlan.

If the current trends in the music DVD world continue, music fans in Canada can expect even more DVD content to be included on their newest album purchases in the coming months.
