Cat Stevens Chosen As Man of Peace

Published: 2004-11-10
Two months ago, Yusuf Islam, better known as Cat Stevens, was denied access to the United States because of suspected ties to terrorism. Now the former folk singer is about to accept an award titled the Man of Peace. The honour will be bestowed upon Islam by Mikhail Gorbachev, ex-leader of the former Soviet Union.

The Man of Peace title goes "to a distinguished personage of culture and entertainment for peace messages, fraternity and integration between nations" every year. Chosen for the award by the Gorbachev Foundation for his charity work with Small Kindness (which he created), and the steps he has taken for peace (and against terrorism), Islam will accept the award at a ceremony in Rome during the 5th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates today (November 10th).

Others who have had the honour of winning the Man of Peace award include Roberto Benigni, an Oscar winning actor ('Life Is Beautiful'), and singer Gianni Morandi.

In other Yusuf Islam news, the singer is ready to make a return to the music charts. After having a string of hits in the '60s and '70s, Islam has teamed up with British pop star Ronan Keating for a Christmas single. The track the pair chose to duet on is 'Father and Son', a song penned by Islam back when he was Cat Stevens. The Keating/Islam duet will be the first single Islam has released in 30 years, and it's currently in top running to be the number one Christmas single in the UK. Way to come back with a bang.
