WCMA Winners Announced

The past Sunday (October 3rd) the winners of the Western Canadian Music Awards were announced in Calgary, Alberta. The WCMA include awards for both artists, and the industry people behind the music. The Industry Awards include recognition of Western Canadian record labels (winner: Stony Plain Records), recording studios (winner: The Warehouse), and music venue (winner: West End Cultural Centre), among others.

It's the Artistic Awards that come with the big names though. With categories that acknowledge both the major-label and independent artists to come out of Western Canada, the WMCAs touch on all parts of the musical spectrum.

Winners of the night included The Weakerthans, Nickelback, Nelly Furtado, and Jann Arden, to name just a few. In a bit of a surprise, country band Doc Walker beat out Nelly Furtado, Nickelback, Sarah McLachlan, and Michael Buble for Entertainer of the Year.

The winners of the 2004 Western Canadian Music Artistic Awards are as follows:

Outstanding Christian Recording - Jill Paquette (self-titled)
Outstanding Country Recording - Doc Walker (Everyone Aboard)
Entertainer of the Year - Doc Walker
Outstanding Francophone Recording - Danielle Herbert (Aventuriere Accidentelle)
Outstanding Album (Independent) - The Weakerthans (Reconstruction Site)
Outstanding Album (Major Label) - Nickelback (The Long Road)
Outstanding Jazz Recording - Marilyn Lerner/Sonny Greenwich - Special Angel
Outstanding Pop Recording - Nelly Furtado - Folklore
Outstanding Producer - Jann Arden/Russell Broom (Love is the Only Soldier)
Outstanding Rap/Hip-Hop Recording - Swollen Members (Heavy)
Outstanding Rock Recording - Matthew Good (avalanche)
Outstanding Roots Recording - The Wailin' Jennys (40 Days)
Outstanding Songwriter - John K. Samson/ Weakerthans (Reconstruction Site)
Video of the Year - Kyle Davison (Matt Good's 'In A World Called Catastrophe')

Next years Western Canadian Music Awards are set to take place in Vancouver, British Columbia. They will become the 3rd Annual WCMA when 2005 rolls around.
