"His capacity for compassion is limitless, as is his generosity of spirit," said Recording Academy MusiCares Foundation president Neil Portnow. Portnow was speaking of the 2004 MusiCares Person of the Year, Sting. The award recognizes an artist for their accomplishments in music, humanitarian issues, and environmental activism. Sting will join former award winners Bono, Billy Joel, and Sir Elton John.

The award will be presented in Los Angeles on February 6 at the Recording Academy gala. The festivities are a part of Grammy week.

The Recording Academy MusiCares is a foundation that was established in 1989 to provide assistance to musicians in times of need.

Sting is being honoured tonight (Dec. 10) with the Billboard Century Award at the Billboard Music Awards.
