The Clash's 'London Calling' Turns Twenty-Five

Published: 2004-09-16
Next Tuesday (September 21st) will see the release of 'London Calling: The Legacy Edition' which is, of course, the Clash's most famous album. The classic record has been given a make-over to become 'The Legacy Edition', adding a second CD and a DVD to the mix.

The reason that the fine folks at Epic records are releasing 'London Calling: The Legacy Edition' is to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Clash's third album. Originally released on December 14th, 1979 here in North America, 'London Calling' is inarguably one of the defining albums of the early punk scene.

Of course the first CD included in 'London Calling: The Legacy Edition' features the original track-listing of the 1979 release in full. The extra CD attached to the new edition of the album contains demos that Mick Jones recently stumbled upon, the near-mythological 'Vanilla Tapes'. The DVD is the home for a 45 minute documentary of the band around the time 'London Calling' was recorded, live performances, and interviews with all of the band members (lead vocalist/guitarist Joe Strummer, guitarist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon).

This December 22nd will mark two years since the late, great Joe Strummer suffered a heart attack and died in his home at the age of fifty. The last album Strummer released was with his band the Mescaleros called 'Streetcore', which was released posthumously in late 2003.
