And The Mercury Music Prize Winner Is…

The much coveted award was given to Scotland's art-rock band Franz Ferdinand for their 2004 self-titled album. The four-piece was in the top running for the Prize, along with the Streets and the Zutons.

For winning the Mercury Music Prize 2004, Franz Ferdinand will be given 20,000 GBP. In addition to the money prize, the award usually drives up record sales, although Franz's debut has been selling quite nicely on its own.

Unlike many of the awards given to bands these days, the Mercury Music Prize holds a lot of prestige. Based on the music, and the music alone, the judges give the Prize to whom they determine to be the best British act of the year. By picking up the Mercury, Franz Ferdinand will be added to the list of winners which includes PJ Harvey, Badly Drawn Boy and Pulp.
