Jake Shimabukuro Takes The Ukulele To The Next Level

Published: 2004-08-27
Critics have compared him to Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. He plays virtually any style of music on an instrument with only four strings and a two octave range. He is a 27 year old native of Hawaii named Jake Shimabukuro. And his instrument is the ukulele. Long thought to be an insignificant little instrument that isn't much more than a toy Jake is winning audiences and changing those conceptions with his playing.

Jake began playing at age four when his mother gave him his first ukulele. Jake is the first Hawaiian and the first ever ukulele player to sign with Epic Records. His new album "Walking Down Rainhill" was released earlier this week.

Jake is in no hurry to reach stardom. For Jake Shimabukuro it isn't being there but trying to get there. Jake plays traditional Hawaiian tunes, rock, and classical music on his ukulele and has a good time doing it.
