Ron Sexsmith has been carving out poetic and relevant music for years, Soul Shine's Stephen Clare had a chance to sit down with Ron and discuss his current creative project, Time Being.

SS: What were the reasons you got into music?
RS: It's all I ever wanted to do since I was 4 or 5...so it's more like music got into me.

SS: Are they the same reasons you stay in music?
RS: Yes...definitely....I don't like the music biz that much, but I love making music.

SS: Is the creative process more inspirational or perspirational for you?
RS: It's both...I find it very challenging.

SS: John Coltrane once said "My only job as a musician is to get out of the way"...do you agree?
RS: Yes...in writing my main objective is to try and stay out of the way of the song. I want to write songs that are good whether I'm singing them or not.

SS: What are your thoughts on the state of the Canadian music scene?
RS: It's really happening these days...some wonderful stuff out there and they keep coming.

SS: Who are your favourite Canadian Artists?
RS: I love Sam Roberts, Leslie Feist, By Divine Right, Kyp Harness, Buck 65 Nathan Wiley, Tomi Swick, Divine Brown, Joel Plaskett, to name just a few.

SS: Who are you listening to these days?
RS: Paul Simons new record...it's amazing if I do say so myself. Sam's new album is great too.

SS: What are your thoughts on how the internet has changed the business of music?
RS: I don't really know where it's all heading...it makes me nervous a bit but I'm more worried about the state of the world.

SS: Do you have any advice for young songwriters?
RS: It's important to know the history and the craft of it and to then to find your own voice, melody and point of view. It's also important to be persistent.

SS: What are you up to these days and what's coming up for the next few months?
RS: Things are getting quite busy now...my album will be released in the USA in early September on Kiefer Sutherland's label Ironworks so I'm heading down to the states next week for press etc...I have a few Canadian shows in early August and a new single I think...then from September to December I'm heading out to tour the USA, Japan, Australia Europe , UK and Ireland...then coming home to tour Canada, finishing off with the east coast in January or February. Besides writing my next album...that's basically it.

SS: What's it like for a guy to have a rock star girlfriend (Colleen Hixenbaugh)?
RS: It's wonderful.....I love both of her bands...I think "Jack and Ginger" could be really great if they can keep it together and By Divine Right are one of the best and most underrated bands in Canada. Colleen is also the most affectionate person I have ever met and so it's nice to be on the receiving end of all that.
