Funk Rock Lets Loose

Packing venues across Ontario with their dynamic live shows, Toronto quintet Afflatus are certified veterans of the live indie circuit. With the release of their debut album 'Autumn's Urgency' last summer, things are only destined to get crazier for the band. Jeff Beadle (vocals), Luke Vajsar (bass), Scott Honsberger (drums), Matt Rocca (keys), and Rob Pretsell (guitar) create funk-rock music for the masses, and with 'Autumn's Urgency' now available across Canada, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the country catches on.

It's not like the members of Afflatus are concerned with reaching success of U2 proportions though. Music is a way of life for the quintet, not a path to fame and fortune. For Vajsar, music is simply a way to keep his head from exploding, "If someone is creative they have things running around in their head that need to be released before there is too much to handle."

Live performances are still Afflatus' forte, however. They have a long, fulfilling relationship with Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern, the site of Soul Shine's ALL4INDIE benefit. The tight-knit five-piece released 'Autumn's Urgency' to a packed house there; it's also where Afflatus received their very first encore. "We're lucky enough to have some pretty crazy and dedicated fans," gushes Pretsell. "There's no better buzz in music than feeding off the energy of a good crowd."

While Afflatus is still concentrating on promoting 'Autumn's Urgency', they already have plans for their next album. "We're not thinking of keeping true to any style or formula," Pretsell explains. "We're just writing with no pressure on our shoulders. It's a good feeling, and it's becoming very interesting watching the band mature and grow through this process."

At the end of the day, Afflatus are truly grateful for all the success they've been afforded. Pretsell sums the sentiment up best: "A lot of moderately successful musicians really overlook the fact of what a special thing it is to be able to touch and communicate with even a single person through their music. When you think about it, it really is something special."
